Maruti Suzuki’s Swift move to K Series engine: RightIndicator

Sun, May 9, 2010

This evolution started with Suzuki A-star, 1 liter petrol and now it is transforming the BigBeez of Maruti Suzuki. Yes I am talking about the new K series engine which is now being transplanted in the heart of most of Suzuki cars. The reason is simple- improved Performance, Efficiency and reduced weight, noise. Its not only efficiency and performance but Company is claiming significant amount of reduction in CO2 emission.

At the launching Maruti Suzuki Managing Director and CEO Shinzo Nakanishi said “The K12M engine has been specifically designed for Indian applications. Our engineers worked as part of the Suzuki’s engine design team for design, calibration and testing of the engine in Japan and India. The engine promises to be best-in-class fuel efficient, high performance, low emission, lightweight, with lower NVH (noise, vibration and harshness)”

K series Engine

In Maruti Suzuki’s current K series car portfolio we have A-Star, Ritz, Swift, Dzire, Estilo and Wagon R. Among All 6 only Ritz and A-Star are new offerings but Swift, Estilo, Dzire and WagonR are the makeover of older version with New K series engine. In all these models Engine’s cubic capacity has been dropped by 100 cc but see the power, torque and mileage nos are still speaking in your favor. I would have been happy to see the CC no.s same and increase in performance and efficiency. Compare the specification table below.

Engine Capacity Power @ rpm Torque @ rpm Efficiency
Swift K series
1197 cc 85 PS @ 6000 113 Nm @ 4500 13 Kmpl
Swift 1.3 Sohc
1298 cc 87 PS @ 6000 120 Nm @ 4500 12.3 Kmpl
Estilo K series
998 cc 68 PS @ 6200 90 Nm @ 3500 13.5 Kmpl
Estilo 1.1
1061 67 PS @ 6200 84 Nm @ 3500 13 Kmpl
WagonR K series 998 cc 68 PS @ 6200 90 Nm @ 3500 13.5 Kmpl
WagonR 1.1
1061 cc 67 PS @ 6200 84 Nm @ 3500 13 Kmpl

Above no.s show the promising future of K series engine. I hope to see transformation in Suzuki SX4, Grand Vitara and other models too.
